Stainless Steel of Grade 317 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that has high resistance to corrosion. 317’s tensile and creep strength as well as its corrosion resistance are highest amongst the 300 series. It owes its superior pitting resistance to the high molybdenum content within the alloy. Since it is corrosion and oxidation resistant it is used in many industries where sanitary equipment is important. These pipes are used for food processing equipment, marine components, pulp and paper applications as well as components in the oil and gas industry.

Alloy 317L is an even lower carbon concentration version of 317. This increases its resistance to corrosion which is already high due to the chromium-nickel-molybdenum mix of this alloy. This alloy can be used in its welded condition because of the low amounts of inter-granular corrosion caused during the welding process. This alloy remains non-magnetic in its annealed state. Since the alloy is austenitic in nature it cannot be hardened by heat treatment however cold working is a viable option.
The 317 grade has properties that enable high oxidation and corrosion resistance against numerous chemicals. It resists rusting in acidic chlorine, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid. This makes it prime for use in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Its corrosion resistance is high with the only exception being continuous use at 427 – 816°C.
